Peeling - colloquially referred to as exfoliation of the outer layer of the skin. We distinguish between deep, medium-depth, and superficial peels used in cosmetic clinics. Medium and deep peels can only be performed by a trained physician, often requiring anesthesia and sometimes monitoring using medical equipment. Exfoliating the skin significantly improves its condition and stimulates it to intense renewal. Almost every part of the body, including hair and nails, requires cleansing.
Regular peels remove a layer of dead, dull cells from the skin's surface. The skin underneath is much brighter, rosier, smoother - simply refreshed. Under the influence of massage, it becomes better supplied with blood, produces more collagen and elastin fibers, making it firmer. Wrinkles are reduced, and pores are unblocked. Exfoliation also prevents the formation of discoloration. Cleansed of impurities and excess sebum, the skin better absorbs the nourishing substances delivered in creams and masks.
The natural skin renewal cycle lasts 28 days. During this time, cells migrate from deeper layers of the epidermis to the stratum corneum. After fulfilling their functions, they die and shed.
This enables skin regeneration. If this process is disturbed, the skin becomes rough, ages faster, or develops blackheads. Peeling is intended to facilitate the removal of unnecessary cells, allowing new ones to appear more quickly. Dermatologists disagree on how often this procedure should be performed. Some believe that once a month is sufficient. However, many recommend using peeling much more often: once or twice a week for thick, oily-prone skin. For thin, dry, sensitive, or vascular skin, once a week or even every two weeks is recommended. Body peeling can be applied as needed, ideally once a week.
Types of facial peels
Mechanical
Literally scrapes off dead skin cells. It is rough due to the presence of granular particles, which can be of natural origin, most commonly from almond shells, nuts, apricot kernels, or sand. Some peels contain synthetic, polyethylene beads. These act more gently because the beads have a regular shape and are softer than natural substances. Mechanical peeling can be used on oily skin, with blackheads (but not with pustular acne), and normal skin. It is applied to damp skin, massaged in circular motions, and then rinsed off.
Gommage
It combines the benefits of mechanical and enzymatic peeling. It may contain tiny and delicate abrasive particles, although the product appears perfectly smooth and creamy. It is applied like a cosmetic mask, evenly spread on the face. The product first dissolves dead skin, then removes it. It gets its name from the rubbing technique - gommage. It is removed after drying, rubbing the skin. Under massage, it crumbles, resembling erasing with a rubber. It is suitable for all skin types except very sensitive and prone to redness.
Enzymatic
The enzymes it contains - extracts from fruits, yeast, herbs - dissolve the chemical bonds between keratin molecules in dead skin cells. They do not irritate, so they are suitable for all skin types, even sensitive ones. Enzymatic peeling is applied like a cosmetic mask, evenly spread on the face. It is rinsed off with water after 10-15 minutes.
In the salon
Recently, there have been more and more products whose action is said to be comparable to treatments in beauty salons and aesthetic medicine. Indeed, they provide a spectacular effect at home, but salon treatment is much stronger. Products in this group are advertised, for example, as home microdermabrasion. These are products classified as mechanical peels, in which the same abrasive substance is used as in microdermabrasion devices - aluminum oxide. The second group consists of chemical peels based on fruit acids. AHA acids effectively encourage the skin to work. They improve its hydration, color, and regulate sebum secretion. Note: if you use a peel with fruit acids, do not forget about sun protection. However, the best results are achieved by visiting a specialized salon or clinic. The peel is performed under intravenous anesthesia. The patient needs to stay in the clinic.
